LG Electronics and SK Innovation have agreed to collaborate on securing high-efficiency Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) solutions to reduce power consumption and heat generation in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Recently, LG has been expanding its solution orders by collaborating individually with companies undertaking data center construction projects to meet the increasing demand for AI data center HVAC solutions. In the LG CNS data center project, LG Energy Solution is collaborating under the 'One LG' initiative, while the GS Group project will see collaboration with GS IMT. The partnership with SK Innovation is seen as a step towards entering the global market and potentially expanding orders related to the SK Group in the future.
LG Electronics and SK Innovation announced on the 18th that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the 17th at the SK Seorin Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, for the 'Joint Development and Commercialization of AI Data Center Energy and Cooling Integrated Solutions.' The signing ceremony was attended by Jae-sung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' ES Business Division, and Moo-hwan Kim, Head of SK Innovation's Energy Solution Business Unit, among other key officials.
Under the agreement, LG Electronics will promote the supply of air cooling solutions such as chillers and Fan Wall Units (FWU), as well as liquid cooling solutions like Coolant Distribution Units (CDU). To this end, they will work on demonstrating and advancing cooling solution technologies to lower AI data center temperatures. SK Innovation will be responsible for power supply and operational optimization, providing AI-based Data Center Management Systems (DCMS), auxiliary power (ESS and fuel cell) design, and power peak reduction solutions.

Additionally, LG Electronics and SK Innovation plan to jointly develop next-generation solutions that automatically control cooling systems through stable power supply and AI-based real-time energy analysis. They also plan to collaborate in the Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) field, including HVAC solutions utilizing waste heat and power peak management using Energy Storage Systems (ESS). They are reportedly considering a method that uses fuel cells as a power source and waste heat to cool data centers. Through this, they aim to secure references related to carbon emission and energy use reduction and expand the energy service business globally by offering cooling and energy solutions as a package.
Moo-hwan Kim, Head of SK Innovation's Energy Solution Business Unit, stated, "With this agreement, the two companies will integrate optimized technologies to establish themselves as a turnkey provider offering verified data center solutions to customers," adding, "We will continue to lead in enhancing competitiveness across the energy industry in line with the upcoming AI era through strategic cooperation."
Jae-sung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' ES Business Division, commented, "Through this agreement, we will strengthen our competitiveness in the global AI data center market by leveraging the synergy of both companies' technologies, not only in data center cooling solutions but also in integrated solutions that can reduce energy costs."
